The ninth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team (7-4, 3-0) travels east on the New York State Thurway for its lone contest this week at the 18th-ranked University of Albany (10-2) on Sunday, October 10 at 2 p.m. The Great Danes host Maine on Saturday before hosting the Orange on Sunday.
Albany Series Notes
Sunday's meeting between Syracuse and Albany will mark the 11th between the two institutions. Syracuse holds a 9-1 lead in the series. The Orange has outscored the Great Danes, 36-9. SU is 1-1 all-time against Albany in the Capital City. The Great Danes last defeated the Orange in 2005 when they took home a 2-1 overtime decision on their home turf. Syracuse defeated Albany last season 1-0 in Salt City.
Last Meeting with the Great Danes
Current senior Maggie Befort tipped in a pass from two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad in the 46th-minute to give Syracuse a 1-0 victory versus Albany October 4, 2009 at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Current sophomore Leann Stiver made two saves in her second career shutout. Christine Hoffman and Kristi Troch combined to make three saves for the Great Danes. Syracuse held a 10-3 advantage in shots, including a 7-1 edge in the second half. SU also held a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners, with an 8-2 edge in the second half.
Orange Players Against the Great Danes
Only three players have recorded points against Albany. Two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad leads the way with five points off two goals and one assist. Senior back Maggie Befort has scored one goal against the Great Danes during her four-year career. All-American Martina Loncarica rounds out the group with one assist.

All-American Lindsey Conrad ranks third among active players in career points with 150 and third in career goals with 63. Senior back Maggie Befort is fourth among active players in career assists with 47 and 11th in points with 113. All-American Martina Loncarica is second among active players in career assists with 52. Syracuse is the only team to have three players record 100-plus career points. Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver leads active players in career saves percentage at .828 and eighth in career goals-against-average at 1.30. Head coach Ange Bradley's winning percentage (.713) ranks sixth among active coaches.
Scouting the Orange
All-American Martina Loncarica leads the way for the Orange with 16 points off a team-high tying six goals and four assists. Freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer has recorded 13 points off three goals and a team-best seven assists. Two-time All-American Lindsey Conrad is next with 12 points off a team-high tying six goals. Junior forward Heather Susek has notched four goals and three assists for 11 points. Senior back Maggie Befort is next with eight points off three goals and two assists. Sophomore back Amy Kee has netted two goals and tallied two assists for a total of six points. She also has one defensive save. Senior forward Kristin Girouard has notched three points off one goal and one assist. Senior forward Shelby Schraden, sophomore forward Kelsey Millman and sophomore back Iona Holloway have each scored once. Junior midfielder Liz McInerney rounds out the scoring with two assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver has played all but eight minutes for the Orange. She has a 1.32 goals-against-average and a .746 saves percentage.
Orange in the Record Books
Senior back Maggie Befort has scored a school record 113 points in her four-year career. Befort is also second on SU's all-time assist chart with 47 and tied for eighth in goals scored with 33. All-American Lindsey Conrad has scored a school record 44 goals. She is also second on SU's all-time points list with 106. All-American Martina Loncarica ranks first on SU's all-time assists list with 52. She is also third on the all-time points list with 104.
Miscellaneous Tidbits
The Orange is first the BIG EAST in shots (215) and shots per game (19.55). Syracuse has been ranked in the top 10 for 27 consecutive weeks. SU was ranked 17th on August 28, 2008, but moved up to number seven a week later and has not dropped out of the top 10 since. The Orange has won 11 consecutive BIG EAST Regular season games dating back to October 18, 2008. Syracuse's 2-1 overtime loss to Kent State on September 4 was its first loss to a non-ranked team since October 25, 2007 (52 games ago).

The Orange boasts six international players on its roster. Each one has made significant contributions this season. She was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts against Northeastern and Northwestern. Junior midfielder Liz McInerney (Dublin, Ireland) has started in all 11 games for Syracuse. She has six points off two goals and two assists. Freshman back Laura Hahnefeldt (Hamburg, Germany) has started 10 games for the Orange, helping limit its opponents to 15 goals off only 104 shots.
Scouting Albany
The No. 17 Great Danes (10-2, 1-0) went 3-0 last week, defeating Siena, 9-1, on September 28, Fairfield, 3-0, on October 2 and Providence, 3-2, on October 3.Albany will host Maine at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 9 before it faces the Orange. The Great Danes have won their last six games. They have outscored their opponents, 32-15, and hold an 82-36 advantage in penalty corners. Junior forward Christina Patrick leads the Great Danes with 26 points off 11 goals and four assists. Senior captain Suzy Clephane is the defending America East Conference Defensive Player of the Year. She has helped limit opponents to 9.9 shots per game. Freshman forward Daphne Voormolen has netted eight goals. Midfileder Taylor Luke is tied for the America East Conference lead with two defensive saves. Sophomore goalkeeper Kristi Troch averages 6.00 saves per game and has a goals-against-average of 1.00.
Loncarica & Nelson Named to Honor Roll
All-American Martina Loncarica and junior midfielder Nicole Nelson were both named the BIG EAST Conference Weekly Field Hockey Honor Roll for their performances in Syracuse's two games last weekend. Loncarica scored twice in SU's 3-0 BIG EAST victory at Providence, while Nelson helped anchor the Orange defense at Providence and Massachusetts. Loncarica scored two goals in Syracuse's 3-0 BIG EAST victory at Providence on October 2. The All-American has recorded a team-best 16 points, including a team-high tying six goals and four assists. Loncarica is third on SU's all-time points list with 104 and first on SU's all-time assist chart with 52. Nelson helped lead the Orange to its first shutout win of the season at BIG EAST foe Providence. It was Syracuse's fist shutout victory since defeating Dartmouth, 2-0, on October 11, 2009. Nelson and the Orange limited Providence to two shots and zero corners.
Last Weekend in Review
Syracuse went 1-1 last week. The Orange won its third BIG EAST Conference game of the season, shutting out Providence, 3-0, on October 2 in Rhode Island. Syracuse was shutout by Massachusetts, 2-0, a day later in Amherst. The Orange dominated play, outshooting the Friars 16-2, while holding an 8-0 advantage in penalty corners. All-American Martina Loncarica scored two goals. Junior midfielder Liz McInerney provided the third for the Orange. Freshman midfielder Leonie Geyer recorded the game's lone assist on Loncarica's first goal of the day. Sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver made one save in the win. The Orange outshot the Minutewomen, 23-11, and held an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners, but could not find the back of the cage on Sunday. Stiver recorded three saves for the Orange.
