SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse (19-2, 2-2) defeated Connecticut (2-13, 0-4) in its BIG EAST opener on Friday afternoon in the Women's Building. The Huskies came on strong, taking the first match, 25-19, before the Orange rallied to take the next three, 25-21, 25-14, 25-21 and win the match, 3-1.
Six different players logged four or more kills for the Orange, including two in double figures. Senior outside hitter Hayley Todd led the way with 13 kills, seven digs and three blocks while junior outside hitter Noemie Lefebvre notched her 42nd career double-double with 10 kills and a match-best 13 digs. Senior right side Mindy Stanislovaitis added nine kills while freshman middle blocker Lindsay McCabe hit .429 with eight kills and a match-best four total blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Samantha Hinz tallied four kills while classmate Laura Homann dished out 39 assists with four kills.
Defensively, senior libero Sarah Hayes had 10 digs while sophomore defensive specialist Zoe Guzman added seven.
The Orange continues its three-match home stand when it hosts St. John's on Sunday, October 10 at 2 p.m. in the Women's Building. Admission and parking is free.
