SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman goaltender Kallie Billadeau turned away 26 shots against No. 8 New Hampshire to help the Syracuse University women's ice hockey team defeat the Wildcats 4-2. The Orange is unbeaten so far this season and is off to its best start in program history (1-0-1).
The Orange came out firing from the opening faceoff and held a 4-0 advantage after two periods. Syracuse held the Wildcats scoreless through 51 minutes of play before UNH's Arielle O'Neill found the back of the net. New Hampshire continued to rally back in the final period and O'Neill's second goal of the game made it 4-2. Billadeau played a key role in fighting off the Wildcats' counterattack, tallying 12 saves in the third period.
Senior Stefanie Marty and junior Megan Skelly each had one goal and one assist in the win. Marty has put SU on the scoreboard first in each of its two games this season. Senior Julie Rising continued to create chances for the Orange as she dished out two assists. Last weekend, she recorded a program-best four assists against Northeastern. Senior transfer Ashley Cockell added to the scoring column in the second period, scoring her first career goal for Syracuse on an assist from sophomore Isabel Menard. Cockell made the transition from defense to forward during the Northeastern matchup after proving to be an immediate offensive threat. Junior Lisa Mullan registered her first goal of the 2010-11 campaign, which was credited as the game-winning score.
For the second consecutive game, several of SU's rookies turned in solid performances. Christina LaCombe has recorded an assist in back-to-back games, while Sadie St. Germain tallied the first point of her career off an assist to Mullan.
The Wildcats held a slight advantage in shots (28-27), but it was the Orange who capitalized on its opportunities. Many of SU's chances stemmed from the relentless efforts of Syracuse's defense. Menard blocked three of New Hampshire's shot attempts, while junior Kelly Dimmen deflected two. Marty was dominate in the faceoff circle once again, winning 23-of-35 battles.
The Orange will return to the ice tomorrow (Oct. 9) at 4 p.m. to face No. 9 Boston College at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Eagles cruised past Colgate, 4-0, in its season opener tonight in neighboring Hamilton, N.Y.
