SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim moved into fifth on the all-time win list and #10/13 Syracuse defeated state rival Canisius, 86-67, on Sunday in the Carrier Dome.
Five members of the Orange tallied double-figures to lead SU. Senior Rick Jackson controlled the paint on both ends of the court and registered a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. He also blocked four of Canisius' shot attempts.
Boeheim earned the 831st win of his Syracuse tenure, breaking what had been a tie with long-time former St. Mary's Coach Jim Phelan for fifth on the all-time Division I list.
Sophomore Brandon Triche finished with 16 points, including 12 points from behind the arc. Junior Scoop Jardine netted 13 points and dished out a game high eight assists. He drained two three-pointers, with one coming in each half. Freshman #C.J. Fair# recorded his first career game in double-figures with 11 points, while junior Kris Joseph added 10 points and seven boards.
The first half was a hard fought, defensive battle for both teams and featured three lead changes. SU went on a 7-0 run late in the half to give the Orange its biggest lead of the half, 32-26. A three-point play by Joseph gave the Orange the momentum heading into the break.
Syracuse scored six unanswered points to start the second half. Triche provided a spark for the Orange offense, scoring eight points in the first five minutes of the second half, including two three-pointers. His second three started a 10-0 SU run to put the Orange up, 51-37. Joseph added to the scoring column with his second three-point play of the night to keep Syracuse's offense rolling.
For the second consecutive game Syracuse's offense came alive in the second half after a slow start in the first stanza. The Orange shot 21-of-40 (.525) from the floor in the second half. SU's team height proved to be a key for the Orange as it outrebounded the Griffins 58-43, including 15 from freshman Baye Moussa Keita.
Canisius, led by head coach Tom Parrotta, was paced by senior Greg Logins' 17 points and five rebounds.
