CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Syracuse swim team matched up against the nation's best on day one of the NIKE Cup on Thursday night at the Koury Natatorium at the University of North Carolina. Senior Kuba Kotynia led the group of six swimmers, qualifying for the finals in the 200-yard individual medley.
Kotynia touched the wall at 1:52.95 in the 200-yard IM preliminaries to qualify for the final later in the day. The Lodz, Poland native finished 14th in the final with a time of 1:53.62.
Senior Brian Zimmerman joined Kotynia in the 200 IM preliminaries, finishing with a mark of 2:03.40. Sophomore Chad Flanick also represented the men, clocking 23.77 in the 50-yard freestyle.
Junior Chelsea Bryan was the top finisher for the women, touching the wall at 25.28 in the 50-yard freestyle. Senior Stephanie Lefebvre-Kuczynski and freshman Marykate McBride also featured in the event, finishing 71st (26.31) and 74th (27.07), respectively.
Senior Alice Stejskal rounded out the SU competitors on day one, notching a time of 2:31.01 in the 200-yard IM.
