SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Basketball returned to the Carrier Dome on Tuesday and the Orange defeated Division II Kutztown in its exhibition opener, 96-60. Freshman #C.J. Fair and junior Kris Joseph# led the Orange with 14 points and six rebounds apiece.
Syracuse shot a solid 39-of-81 (.481) from the floor and a perfect 13-13 from the charity strip in its first outing. The win was a balanced team effort as 11 different players scored and 46 of SU's points came from its talented bench.
Senior forward Rick Jackson opened all scoring, netting the first four points of the game. He finished with 10 points, eight of which came in the first half, and four rebounds. Junior Scoop Jardine registered 11 points, three assists and two steals, while sophomore Mookie Jones had ten points, including two three-pointers, and two steals.
Four fresh faces made their first collegiate appearance in an Orange uniform. BIG EAST Preseason Rookie of the Year Fab Melo registered nine points, four rebounds and four blocks. Rookie Baye Moussa Keita added eight points, six boards and four shot rejections.
The Orange held a 47-32 advantage at the break and pulled away right from the start of the second half. Five minutes into the second period, SU began a 10-0 run to put Syracuse up, 65-40, and put the game out of reach for the Golden Bears. SU caused 24 Kutztown turnovers, which resulted in 27 points fast break points.
Syracuse dominated in the paint tallying 62 points compared to Kutztown's 20. The Orange pulled down 22 offensive rebounds and netted 30 second-chance points.
The Golden Bears, coached by Bernie Driscoll, were led by senior guard Steve Coffey, who posted 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Orange completes its brief exhibition schedule on Tuesday, November 9 when it hosts cross-town foe LeMoyne at 7:00 p.m. Syracuse fans can catch the Orange against the Dolphins on Time Warner Cable Sports.
