SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's ice hockey won its second consecutive game, 4-3, at Colgate on Tuesday. The win marked SU's first victory against the Raiders after being edged by one goal in each of the first three meetings.
Syracuse and Colgate traded goals for the first two periods until the Orange took its final lead, 4-3, with one minute remaining in the second period. SU and Colgate each tallied 30 shots on net, but the Orange was able to convert when it counted.
Freshman Cara Johnson scored the first goal of the night after just 2:55 of play. Junior Lisa Mullan and sophomore Holly Carrie-Mattimoe played the puck on net and Johnson knocked in the rebound past Colgate goalkeeper Kimberly Sass. SU has scored the first goal in nine out of 12 matchups this season and is 6-2-1 when doing so.
The Raiders responded and the two teams were knotted 1-1 at the end of the first stanza. Syracuse's leading scorer, Isabel Menard tallied her eighth goal of the season to regain the lead for SU. She took the puck down the right side and fired a hard shot into the upper corner of the net. The play began with two well-strung passes from Carrie-Mattimoe and senior Ashley Cockell. Colgate's Brittany Phillips scored the next two goals to put the Raiders up, 3-2.
The last eight minutes of the second period belonged to the Orange. Junior Megan Skelly cleaned up a loose puck in front of the net and tied the game for the second time. Menard and Johnson were credited with assists on the play. Senior Julie Rising tallied the go-ahead goal with one minute remaining in the second. On an SU power-play, freshman Akane Hosoyamada found Cockell wide open on the right side, who played a hard pass in front of the net. Rising one-timed the game-winning goal past CU's goalie.
Freshman goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater earned her sixth start in net and turned away 27 Raider shots, including 14 in the final period to hold Colgate scoreless.
The Orange will return home to the friendly confines of Tennity Ice Pavilion for a two-game series with RPI on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 26 and 27. Friday's matchup will start at 7 p.m. and the puck will drop at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
