SYRACUSE - The Syracuse University men and women's rowing teams each raced multiple boats at the programs' annual Syracuse Invitational this morning at the Ten Eyck Boathouse located at Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbranch Park.
The Syracuse Invitational is an annual series of three-mile races hosted by the Syracuse University crew coaching staff for northeast men and women's collegiate crews (including freshmen and novice). The Syracuse Invitational is composed of four-person shell races for varsity men and women, and eight-person shell races for freshmen men and novice women.
The Orange men's varsity “A” boat of Mike Dietrick, Dan Turner, Vince Berry, Mike Gennaro and Kenny Marfilius took first place out of 17 crews in the varsity four flight with a time of 16:22.6. It finished 11.8 seconds ahead of second-place Cornell. The Syracuse men's “B” boat placed third with a time of 16:52.5.
The Syracuse women's varsity “A” boat of Allison Todd, Macey Miller, Miranda Williams, Tiffany Macon and Rebecca Soja placed fourth out of 17 crews in the varsity four flight with a time of 19:20.9. Cornell won the race with a time of 18.52.7.
The Orange men's freshman “A” boat took fourth place out of 13 crews with a time of 16:48.0 in the freshman eight flight. Cornell finished first with a time of 16:23.5.
The Syracuse women's novice “A” boat finished third out of seven teams in the women's novice eight flight with a time of 19:32.7. Cornell placed first with a time 18:51.0.
Having a vessel named for you is the highest honor in the sport of men's rowing. The Class of 1988 received that honor before today's race as the Syracuse men's rowing team named a new racing shell in a christening ceremony. The 1970 crew and Dr. Bruce Chamberlin were also recognized before today's race.
Both the Syracuse University men and women's rowing teams return to action at the Foot of the Charles in Boston, Mass. this month. The Orange women will compete in the event on Saturday, November 13, while the men will participate the following weekend on Saturday, November 20.
