SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater registered her second shutout of the season as the Syracuse women's ice hockey team held Wayne State scoreless, 3-0, in the Orange's first CHA matchup.
SU took an early 1-0 lead, scoring its fastest goal of the season just 51 seconds into the contest. Junior Megan Skelly cleaned up a loose puck in front of the net that was played in by sophomore Isabel Menard from freshman Akane Hosoyamada.
The next 42 minutes was a defensive battle between Syracuse and Wayne state as neither team could manage a score. The Orange tallied eight shots, while the Warriors notched seven in the scoreless second period. After the second intermission SU's offense came alive. On a Wayne State power-play, senior Julie Rising intercepted a Wayne State pass in front of the Warriors net and found herself one-on-one with WSU's goaltender Delayne Brian. Rising faked and beat Brian top corner. The goal marked SU's first short-handed score of the season.
With 1:48 remaining in regulation on an Orange power-play, Hosoyamada swung the puck down low to sophomore Holly Carrie-Mattimoe who sent a hard pass to Menard for the goal. Menard posted her eighth multiple-point scoring effort to increase her SU record-holding mark. Syracuse outshot Wayne State 33-16 and Drinkwater denied all 16 of WSU's shot attempts to secure the shutout.
The Orange and the Warriors will meet on the ice again tomorrow, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Live stats will be available via SUathletics.com.
