SYRACUSE, N.Y. –The Syracuse University women's ice hockey team started College Hockey America (CHA) action with a perfect 2-0 record after beating Wayne State for the second time in as many days, 5-3. SU registered four of its goals in the third period to secure the win.
Despite nine shots from the Orange and six from the Warriors, the first period ended in a 0-0 stalemate. Wayne State tallied the first score of the afternoon at the 10:17 mark of the second stanza. Sophomore Isabel Menard responded with the game-tying goal just three minutes later. Senior Julie Rising fired a shot and Menard was there to clean up the rebound.
Just 1:31 into the third period, senior Stefanie Marty gave Syracuse the lead and the Orange never looked back. Sophomore Holly Carrie-Mattimoe cleaned up a loose puck in front of the net on an Orange power-play to increase SU's lead to 3-1. Less than two minutes later, the Warriors Gina Buquet cut SU's lead to one.
With just under six minutes to play, freshman Akane Hosoyamada advanced the puck up the ice to sophomore Jessica Sorensen who fired a shot under the crossbar from just inside the blue line. Wayne State would not go away and pulled within one, 4-3, for the second time. With 36 seconds remaining in regulation, sophomore Kelsey Welch's goal sealed the win for Syracuse on an assist from Sorensen.
Sorensen's first goal of the season came at the right time as it proved to be the game-winning score. Rising, Hosoyamada, and freshman Margot Scharfe each finished with two assists. Freshman goaltender Kallie Billadeau recorded 19 saves in the win to improve SU's overall record to 8-7-2.
The Orange will travel to New Jersey for its last two game series of 2010 against Princeton. The puck will drop on Dec. 10 and 11 at 4 p.m.
