
Syracuse Splits on Day Two at the Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Orange (1-2) split its games on day two of the Louisiana Classics tournament, falling to No. 23/24 Louisiana-Lafayette, 9-0, before shutting out Bryant, 5-0. Syracuse struggled offensively, collecting only three hits against a strong Ragin' Cajuns team, but found its swing with nine hits, including three multi-base hits versus Bryant.
Freshman Veronica Grant led the Orange against UL, going 1-for-3 with a double. Sophomore transfer Lisaira Daniels was 1-for-2 in the game while sophomore Kelly Saco went 1-for-3.
Rookie hurler Stacy Kuwik made her collegiate debut, earning the start against the Cajuns, allowing five earned runs in 3.2 innings while striking out four. Sophomore ace Jenna Caira entered in relief in the fourth, striking out four while allowing a pair of earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.
The Cajuns put a pair of runs on the board in the second inning and increased their lead with three runs in the fourth. The tournament hosts built the edge with a run in the top of the sixth, before cementing the victory with a three-run seventh.
Syracuse rebounded against the Bulldogs in game two of the day, to claim their first victory of the season. Grant once again led the Orange offense, going 3-for-4 with a double, a pair of RBI and two stolen bases. Daniels was 2-for-4 while Saco was 1-for-2 with a double. Watts also set the tone at the plate, blasting the first Syracuse home run of the season, a three-run blast, over the wall in right center.
Senior Brittany Gardner earned the victory in the circle, pitching the complete game shutout while striking out eight.
The Orange faces both Bryant and Lousiana-Lafayette again tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively (both CST).
