SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior Wes Johnson is front-and-center on the cover of this week's issue of Sports Illustrated. The annual NCAA Tournament Preview edition features six regional covers highlighting specific players from each region.
A first team USBWA All-American and BIG EAST Player of the Year, Johnson leads the Orange in scoring (16.0), rebounding (8.4), and minutes played (34.7) averages. He has started all 32 games this season after sitting out in 2008-09 due to NCAA transfer rules.
Johnson was also named a NABC First Team All-District, a USBWA All-District selection, a FoxSports.com First Team All-American and earned Sporting News Second Team All-America honors. The Corsicana, Texas native also earned Newcomer of the Year accolades from Yahoo! Sports and is a finalist for the Naismith, Oscar Robertson and Wooden Awards.
It is the second consecutive year the Orange have been highlighted on the Sports Illustrated NCAA Tournament Preview cover as Jonny Flynn was one of the players featured last season.
Syracuse enters the NCAA Tournament with a 28-4 overall record and is one of four number one seeds. The Orange opens tournament play against Vermont in Buffalo, N.Y. on Friday, March 18 at 9:30 p.m.
