Sophomore forward Kris Joseph has been named the recipient of the BIG EAST Conference Sixth Man Award. The announcement was made by the conference office on March 8, one day prior to the start of the league tournament.
Joseph has played in all 31 games for Syracuse (28-3, 15-3) this season. An injury to Arinze Onuaku forced Joseph into the starting lineup for one game but he has come off the bench in the other 30 outings to date. Joseph is averaging 11.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per outing, the third-best marks on the squad.
He has scored in double digits in 19 games this season, including a career-high 23 against Providence. Joseph has posted double-doubles against Florida (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Marquette (14 points, 11 rebounds).
The Orange won the BIG EAST Conference regular-season championship and are the top seed in this week's BIG EAST Tournament in New York.
The Sixth Man Award was first presented in 2007-08. Joseph is the first Syracuse player to earn the recognition. The conference also announced the following award winners on Monday: Rutgers' Hamady Ndiaye, Defensive Player of the Year; Tory Jackson from Notre Dame, Sportsmanship Award; and Ashton Gibbs of Pittsburgh, Most Improved Player.
On Sunday the conference announced its All-BIG EAST squads. Wes Johnson was a first-team selection, Andy Rautins and second-team pick, and Brandon Triche was named to the all-rookie squad.
