16/16 LSU Bests SU in Tournament Final

BATON ROUE, La. – Syracuse (6-9) fell to 16/16 LSU (18-4), 9-2, in the championship game of the Purple and Gold Challenge on Sunday afternoon at Tiger Park. Middle infielder Stephanie Watts and right fielder Lisaira Daniels were named to the all-tournament team.
Watts was .429 in five tournament games with a double, a home run and three RBI while recording nine putouts between second base and shortstop. Daniels hit .500 with a double and four RBI and had a pair of stolen bases in tournament play.
Watts and freshman Veronica Grant led the Orange offensively, each batting .333 (1-for-3) on the day. Sophomores Kelly Saco and Lacey Kohl were also productive offensively, each driving in a run.
Freshman Stacy Kuwik and senior Brittany Gardner combined in the circle. Kuwik took the loss, allowing seven earned runs in 2.2 innings while Gardner allowed one earned run in 3.1 innings of work.
After a shutout first inning for both side, the Tigers put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the second.
The Orange answered, scoring a pair in the top of the third. Grant singled through the left side to lead off the inning before Watts singled through the right side, putting two on. Daniels reached on an LSU fielding error, loading the bases. Saco drew a walk, allowing Grant to cross the plate and starting LSU pitcher Brittany Mack hit Kohl to walk in Watts, evening the score, 2-2.
LSU quickly rebounded, breaking the game open with six runs in the bottom of the third and added an insure run in the bottom of the fourth to produce the final, 9-2.
Syracuse embarks on its spring break trip beginning at the FAU Parents Weekend Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. on Friday, March 12. The Orange will spend the week in Florida, facing off against Iowa in a neutral site game on Tuesday, March 16 before participating in the USF “The Game” Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. beginning Friday, March 19.
