SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Simone Kalhorn (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and senior Mark Vyzas (Plainfield, N.J.) are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of April 19.
Kalhorn is a member of the tennis team. She compiled a 15-6 record in singles play during the regular season and was 17-4 in doubles play, ending the season on a 11-match doubles win streak. A team co-captain, Kalhorn led the Orange to its best season ever as the team set a program record for wins (19) and notched the best win percentage since 1978-79.
Kalhorn is a biochemistry major in the College of Arts & Sciences. The tennis team travels to Notre Dame as the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Championship, which begins Thursday, April 22.
Vyzas is a member of the men's rowing team. He has helped the men's crew team to a No. 5 overall ranking, the highest in program history in the USRowing Men's Varsity Eight Collegiate Coaches Poll. Vyzas sat in the five seat of the third varsity eight during the 2008-09 season.
Vyzas is a psychology major in the College of Arts & Sciences. The men's crew team returns to action in the Conlon Cup in Pelham, N.Y. on Saturday, April 24.
