WASHINGTON, D.C. – Syracuse (15-15, 1-2) used explosive offense and flawless defense to defeat Georgetown (14-17, 4-2) in the third and final game of the series on Saturday morning at Guy Mason Field in Washington, D.C.
Freshman right hander Stacy Kuwik set the tone for the Orange in the circle, earning her third win of the season with her second one-hit performance. Kuwik threw the complete game, shutting out the Hoyas while striking out four and not issuing any walks. The Fairport, N.Y. native also added a spark offensively, blasting her first career home run.
Sophomore Lisaira Daniels was the offensive leader on the day, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, two stolen bases and a pair of runs scored. Junior Hallie Gibbs was equally impressive, rounding out her big offensive performance going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.
Sophomore Lacey Kohl and freshman Veronica Grant each recorded a hit for the Orange, Grant hit her team-leading 12th double of the season, two shy of the freshman record set by Tonye McCorkle in 2006.
The Orange came to play, taking a lead it would never relinquish in the top of the first. Grant led off the game with a double to left center and Daniels singled to left, allowing the speedy Grant time to round third and score. Gibbs hit a one-out single to right center, putting two on board for Kohl, who doubled to right field, scoring Daniels to give Syracuse a 2-0 edge.
Kuwik built the lead to 3-0, clocking her first career home run well over the right field fence in the top of the second.
The scoring continued in the top of the third as Daniels bunted her way on and stole second. A one out home run over the center field fence by Gibbs scored the pair, bumping the Syracuse lead to 5-0.
Syracuse added its final insurance run in the top of the seventh, as Daniels hit a two-out single to shortstop and stole second. Sophomore Stephanie Watts drew a walk, putting two on board and a single to left field by Gibbs scored Daniels, producing the final 6-0.
The Orange returns home to the SU Softball Stadium, hosting St. John's on Wednesday, April 7 for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3 p.m
