LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The fifth-ranked Orange shocked top-seeded DePaul, 3-2, in the BIG EAST Semifinal on Friday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. Syracuse scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the come-from-behind victory and advance to the first BIG EAST Final in program history.
Trailing 2-1 in the sixth inning the Orange got an RBI double from junior Hallie Gibbs and an RBI single from sophomore Lacey Kohl to take the lead. Freshman pitcher Stacy Kuwik went seven innings in relief and allowed just four hits and one run.
DePaul got an early run when Alex Morocco scored from third on an illegal pitch in the first inning. The Blue Demons added to its lead in the third inning when Becca Heteniak blasted a solo home run over the left field fence.
Syracuse got one run back in the bottom half of the third on Veronica Grant's RBI double. The hit came with no outs but Heteniak was able to work her way out of further trouble and keep DPU up by one.
Kuwik and Heteniak kept the game scoreless for the next two frames but in the bottom of the sixth the Orange offense came alive. Sophomore Lisaira Daniels led off the inning with an infield single. Gibbs made the most of the opportunity, doubling to the left-center gap to tie it up. Emily Thompson came in to pinch run for Gibbs and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kohl became the hero as the very batter and single into left field which plated Thompson and put SU up 3-2.
Kuwik showed no nerves as a freshman in a big spot, going through the heart of the DePaul lineup in the top of the seventh to secure the win for Syracuse.
Syracuse awaits the winner of this afternoon's Louisville-Notre Dame matchup. Tomorrow's championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m.
