SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Strong pitching performances highlighted Saturday's doubleheader as Syracuse (29-24, 10-10) dropped a pair of games to league-leading DePaul (37-15, 18-3) at the SU Softball Stadium. The Blue Demons took the top half of the twin bill, 1-0, in eight innings before securing a 4-0 victory in game two.
Sophomore ace Jenna Caira took the loss in game one, despite compiling a 0.88 ERA with one earned run and nine strikeouts through 8.0 innings. Freshman Stacy Kuwik was equally impressive in game two, allowing only two hits while striking out 11 and walking one in 7.0 innings.
The day-long pitchers dual limited both teams offensively – the Orange collected six hits through the two games while DePaul tallied eight. Caira matched her pitching performance with a team-best .400 average (2-for-5) in the contest. Kuwik was second on the team, batting .333 (2-for-6) while sophomore Lisaira Daniels and junior Hallie Gibbs accounted for the other SU hits.
The teams battled through seven scoreless innings before the Blue Demons used to hits to bring a run across and seal the game one victory, 1-0.
DePaul carried its momentum into game two, scoring a run in the top of the first and second and added a pair in the top of the sixth off a two-run homer to complete the day one sweep, 4-0.
The teams square off in the regular-season finale at the SU Softball Stadium on Sunday at noon.
