Junior quarterback Ryan Nassib threw for 202 yards on 17-of-35 passing and a touchdown, connecting with seven different receivers for the second time this season in Syracuse's 41-20 loss at the University of Washington on Saturday night. Junior wide receiver Van Chew led the Orange (1-1 overall) with a career-best 83 yards on a personal-best six receptions, while sophomore Alec Lemon had a pair of catches for 34 yards and a touchdown. Senior Delone Carter was the leader on the ground, tallying 91 yards on 18 carries to move into 18th all-time on the Syracuse career rushing list.
For the second straight week, Syracuse scored on its opening drive as Nassib ran for 28 yards, crossing the goal line for his first career rushing touchdown. Nassib's touchdown capped off a six-play, 50-yard scoring drive for the Orange, which began after a career-long 47-yard kickoff return by Prince-Tyson Gulley.
Freshman kicker Ross Krautman increased the Orange lead, 10-0, with a 29-yard field goal on SU's second drive after the stingy Orange defense forced Washington to punt after allowing only 19 yards on six plays.
The Huskies cut the deficit with a 37-yard field goal to make it 10-3 at the end of the first quarter. UW tacked on another three points with a 24-yard field goal on its first drive of the second quarter, cutting the Orange advantage to four, 10-6.
Washington took its first lead of the game when quarterback Jake Locker connected with Jermaine Kearse for a five-yard touchdown pass, giving the Huskies a 13-10 advantage at the half. UW increased its lead out of the break, as Locker and Kearse connected for a pair of touchdowns through the air in the third quarter, making the score 27-10.
Syracuse went 43 yards on 10 plays in its first possession of the fourth quarter and Krautman capped off the drive with a 37-yard field goal to make it a two possession game, 27-13.
Washington's Chris Polk answered with a 52-yard rushing touchdown, rebuilding the Huskies lead, 34-13.
The Orange battled back as senior linebacker Derrell Smith forced a fumble, which sophomore safety Shamarko Thomas recovered on the Washington 30 yard line. It was the sixth career forced fumble for Smith, which ties for third on the SU career record list. Nassib and the Orange offense took over with a quick two play scoring drive, capped off by a 19-yard touchdown reception by Lemon, cutting the Washington lead, 34-20.
After recovering an Orange onside kick attempt at the SU 44 yard line, the Huskies added seven points on the ensuing drive. Locker connected with Devin Aguilar for a 14-yard touchdown pass, producing the final, 41-20.
