SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Four former Syracuse lacrosse stars will take the field for Team USA when it squares off against the Iroquois Nationals in the first-ever Bowhunter Cup on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the War Memorial at Oncenter. Casey Powell, Steve Panarelli, Scott Ditzell and current SU women's assistant coach Regy Thorpe will compete for the American side in the indoor exhibition game, which is a warm-up for May's 2011 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in Prague, Czech Republic.
In addition, the Iroquois team is expected to be headlined by another former SU star - Cody Jamieson. Jamieson was selected No. 1 overall by the Rochester Knighthawks in the National League Lacrosse (NLL) Draft earlier this month.
The game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Adult general admission tickets are $20. Youth/student tickets are $10. Tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com or by calling the Oncenter Box Office at 315-435-2121.
Powell, a four-time All-American at SU, and a professional indoor lacrosse veteran was the 2010 NLL MVP as a member of the Orlando Titans. He scored 287 points in Orange career, which ranks second on the school's career list. He shares the school record for most goals in a game with nine against Towson in 1998 and holds the Orange single-game record with 13 points (7g, 6a) against Virginia in 1997.
Panarelli was a three-time All-American at Syracuse and finished his career with 186 ground balls. He was a member of the Orange's 2004 national championship team and played in the 2007 North-South Senior All-Star Game.
Ditzell was a teammate of Panarelli's on the 2004 NCAA title team. As a senior in 2005, Ditzell collected 30 ground balls and earned honorable mention All-America honors.
Thorpe played two years for the Orange and scooped 64 ground balls in 1993 to help SU win the national championship. He also earned All-America honors following the season. Thorpe currently works as an assistant coach for the SU women's program and helped lead the squad to an appearance in last season's Final Four.
Jamieson played for the Orange in 2009 and 2010. He is most remembered for his overtime goal in the 2009 NCAA title game against Cornell, capping an improbable 10-9 comeback victory for the Orange. He scored 28 goals and passed out 13 assists in 2010 on his way to honorable mention All-America status.
