GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Orange men's soccer team (0-1) goes on the road for the first time in 2010 when it squares off against Adelphi (1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 4. The contest is the start of a five-match road trip for Syracuse and marks the first time since 2003 the Orange will face the Panthers on the road. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at the Outdoor Complex.
LAST TIME OUT
Syracuse began the 2010 campaign with a 5-1 loss to Siena on Wednesday, Sept. 1 in head coach Ian McIntyre's Orange debut. Syracuse trailed 2-0 at the intermission, but got back in the game with a goal off the foot of freshman Brett Jankouskas early in the second half. But the Saints proved to be too much for the hosts, scoring the last three goals of the match to produce the final score.
OFF TO A GOOD START
Jankouskas became the first SU true freshman to score in his Syracuse debut since 2006 when he found the back of the net in the 49th minute against Siena. The last Orange player to record a goal in his collegiate debut was standout Hansen Woodruff, who tallied against Niagara in the 2006 campaign starter.
FRESH FACES
Seven newcomers, including true freshmen Robbie Hughes and Michael Johansson, were in the starting lineup when Syracuse took the field against Siena. The others were: Jeremy Vuolo, Jakob Karlgren, Fredrik Forsman, Federico Agreda and Ryan Tessler.
Overall, eight players made their first starts as members of the Orange in the game. In addition to the seven newcomers, junior #L.J. Papaleo#, a member of the team last season, also received his first SU starting nod Wednesday against the Saints.
SCOUTING ADELPHI
Adelphi got its 2010 season underway on Wednesday with a 1-0 double-overtime win at Fordham. The Panthers finally broke through in the 107th minute as Sam Vanaria tallied the match winner. Goalkeeper Thorne Holder made three saves and earned his first clean sheet of the year.
Adelphi was 13-2-4 overall last season and won the 2009 Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) Championship. The team's most dangerous weapon is 2009 ASC Player of the Year Issa Tall, who ranked second in the nation in goals per game and fourth in points per contest a year ago. He scored 16 goals in 18 games last season and finished with 33 points. Holder led an Adelphi defense that posted a 0.76 goals-against average in 2009.
Carlo Acquista is in his fourth year at the Adelphi helm. The 2009 ASC Coach of the Year, Acquista holds an overall collegiate head coaching record of 48-77-17, including a 30-19-7 mark with the Panthers. Prior to his appointment at Adelphi, Acquista spent five years as the head coach at St. Francis College (N.Y.).
A FAMILIAR FACE ON THE SIDELINE
Former Syracuse soccer standout Chris Aloisi is in his second season at Adelphi as an assistant coach under Acquista. Aloisi played four seasons for the Orange (1999-2000, 02-03) and he is one of only two SU players to be named team captain three times (John McCallion is the other). A two-time All-BIG EAST Third Team performer, Aloisi was drafted 57th overall by the L.A. Galaxy in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft. He played several professional seasons before starting his coaching career.
THE SERIES WITH ADELPHI
Syracuse and Adelphi have met 28 times with the Orange holding a 16-12-0 advantage in the all-time series. The first meeting came in 1980 and the two squads met every year from then until 2005. SU holds the longest winning streak in the series, emerging victorious in nine consecutive matches from 1994 to 2002. Adelphi posted a 2-1 victory in the most recent meeting last year at the SU Soccer Stadium. Issa Tall scored twice in the first half to lead the Panthers to victory.
