BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Syracuse improved to 5-0 on the season with a pair of wins against Tennessee Tech and North Texas in day one of the Samford Invitational on Friday afternoon. Junior outside hitter Noemie Lefebvre - the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week - led the Orange with 29 kills and 23 digs through the two matches.
The Orange continued to dominate the opposition defensively at the net, outblocking the competition, 19.5-2 on Friday for a 2.44 blocks per set average. Sophomore middle blocker Samantha Hinz led the effort with 10 total blocks.
Lefebvre led five Orange who posted double-digit kills on Friday and was one of five student-athletes who had 20 or more digs. Senior outside hitter Hayley Todd was a close second with 28 kills and nine total blocks. Senior right side hitter Mindy Stanislovaitis hit a team-best .538 with 21 kills while freshman middle Lindsay McCabe paired 12 kills with seven blocks. Hinz rounded out the double-digit offense with 11 kills on the day. Sophomore setter Laura Homann directed the offensive effort, dishing out 83 assists to average 10.38 assists per set while adding 21 digs.
Junior libero Ashley Williams led the defensive effort with 27 digs while defensive specialists Sarah Hayes and Zoe Guzman each added 20.
Syracuse continues Samford Tournament action tomorrow, with matches against Northwestern State (12 p.m.) and Samford (7 p.m.).
