SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Redshirt senior goalkeeper Jeremy Vuolo has been named captain of the SU men's soccer team, head coach Ian McIntyre announced on Saturday, Sept. 4. Vuolo was the team's starting keeper in the season opener against Siena on Sept. 1. Prior to coming to Syracuse, Vuolo was a three-year starter and the 2009 team captain at Hartwick College.
Vuolo is the first Syracuse goalie to be selected captain since Alim Karim earned the honor in 2004 and 2005.
Vuolo registered 18 shutouts and more than 200 career saves at Hartwick. He was named the 2009 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Goalkeeper of the Year after posting seven shutouts and finishing second in the league with 74 saves.
Off the field, Vuolo is a 2010 nominee for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, presented to the nation's top Division I men's soccer student-athlete. He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from Hartwick in 2010 and he's enrolled in the MBA program in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse. While at Hartwick, Vuolo formed the school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes subdivision. Under his direction, the group organized several community service events, including the first annual “Hartwick Hill Race” to benefit the Family Resource Network. The event raised more than $3,500 to assist special needs children.
Vuolo and his Orange teammates return to the pitch tonight when Syracuse visits Adelphi for a 7 p.m. match at the Panthers' Outdoor Complex.
