SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Isabel Menard scored two goals to lead Syracuse past Robert Morris, 3-1, in game-two of a College Hockey America (CHA) series on Saturday.
The first period was a hard fought defensive battle that ended in a 0-0 stalemate. RMU's Sara O'Malley put the Colonials on the board first with a goal at the 6:21 mark of the second period.
Five minutes later, Menard tipped a Robert Morris pass near SU's blue line and found herself one-on-one with RMU's goalie. She faked right and backhanded the puck into the net. The game was knotted 1-1 heading into the second intermission.
Just three minutes into the final period, Menard carried the puck down the right side and fired a shot under the crossbar to increase SU's lead to two.
Robert Morris pulled its goalie in the final minutes to focus all its effort on the offensive end and Syracuse's Ashley Cockell found the open net to give the Orange a 3-1 lead with 1:34 remaining in regulation. Sophomore Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and freshman Akane Hosoyamada assisted on the open-net score.
The Colonials outshot the Orange 15-5 in the last 20 minutes of play but freshman goaltender Kallie Billadeau denied every puck that came her way. She made 29 total saves to secure her second win of the weekend.
The Orange will hit the road next weekend to take on CHA foe Niagara in a two-game CHA series on Jan. 21 and 22.
