PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior goalkeeper Liz Hogan was the unanimous choice as the 2011 BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches. The Orange earned three first-place votes and was picked to finish second in the league in the coaches poll, just two points behind preseason favorite Georgetown.
Hogan was one of four Syracuse players named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST team, the most selections for any school in the conference.
The Hoyas received four first-place votes and narrowly beat out Syracuse for the top spot in the poll with 59 points. The Orange was right behind with 57 points. Notre Dame received one first-place vote and was picked third with 50 points. Loyola earned the remaining first-place vote and was fourth in the poll with 47 points. Louisville was picked fifth (36 pts), followed by Rutgers (31 pts.), Connecticut (23 pts.), Cincinnati (14 pts.) and Villanova (11 pts.).
Hogan earned the IWLCA Goalkeeper of the Year award and was a first-team All-America last season after leading the nation in saves with a school-record 211. She also ranked second in save percentage (.525). Hogan was named the 2010 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team. She reached double figures in saves in nine of Syracuse's final 15 games. In addition, Hogan set a school record with 64 ground balls in 2010. She enters her senior season as the Orange's career leader in saves (518) and ground balls (152).
Joining Hogan on the preseason all-conference team are senior attacker Tee Ladouceur, senior defender Catherine Rodriguez and sophomore attacker Michelle Tumolo. Tumolo was the only sophomore to earn preseason all-league honors.
Syracuse opens the 2011 season on Thursday, Feb. 17 against Colgate at 5 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
