MILWAUKEE, Wis. – 9/10 Syracuse (18-4, 5-4) was edged by Marquette (14-8, 5-4), 76-70, in a BIG EAST battle on Saturday at the Bradley Center.
Scoop Jardine conducted SU's offense, recording his first double-double of the season with 13 points a career high 13 assists. The junior guard either scored or assisted on 18 of SU's 28 field goals. Junior Kris Joseph netted a team high 18 points. Jardine and Joseph each went 3-6 from three point range.
A steal by Brandon Triche led to a fast break layup by Jardine and the game was tied for the first time, 56-56, at the 8:18 mark of the second half. Marquette regained a four point lead, but a layup by freshman #C.J. Fair# tied the game once again, 64-64 with 3:10 remaining in regulation.
The Golden Eagles hit two consecutive threes to take a 72-68 lead with 58 seconds to play. A layup by Fair made it 74-70 with 26 seconds on the clock. Marquette went 4-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute to solidify the win.
The Golden Eagles used a 7-0 run to take an early 10-3 lead at the 16:34 mark. A fast break dunk by Joseph brought SU within one, 14-13 with 13:53 remaining in the first half.
Five consecutive points by Marquette's Dwight Buycks put the Golden Eagles up, 23-15, at the 11:00 mark. Marquette led by as much as 11, 31-20, but the Orange chipped away at the lead. A three by Joseph made it 35-29 with three minutes to play in the opening period.
Marquette held Syracuse to just two points in the final three minutes and led 42-31 at the break. The Golden Eagles' 42 first half points are the second most SU has allowed in the first half this season.
The Orange went on an 8-1 run to start the second half and cut Marquette's lead to four, 43-39. Syracuse went 5-5 from the floor in the first five minutes. The two teams traded baskets and a layup by Rick Jackson made it 50-45 at the 11:51 mark.
Triche was fouled while shooting from behind the arc and converted all three shot from the charity stripe to cut MU's lead to four, 53-49 with just over 10 minutes to play. On the ensuing play, Joseph drained a three-pointer from the corner to make it 55-52.
Syracuse tied the game on three different occasions in the second half but could not manage to take the lead.
Jackson finished with 14 points on 6-7 shooting from the floor, while Fair went 5-7 on the afternoon and added 10 points.
The Orange outshot Marquette, going 28-59 (.571) overall, while the Golden Eagles were 23-44 (.523).
Marquette was led by Jae Crowder's 25 points and seven rebounds.
Syracuse will continue its road stand when it travels to Hartford, Conn. to take on 5/5 Connecticut on February 2 at 7 p.m. Syracuse fans can catch the Orange against the Huskies on ESPN.
