SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's ice hockey team (8-9-3, 2-0) scored two goals in the final two minutes of play to force overtime with Colgate (6-12-1, 3-5), which ended in a 4-4 tie.
With two minutes remaining in regulation, the Orange trailed the Raiders, 4-2. With 1:31 left on the clock, freshman Margot Scharfe knocked in a rebound to bring SU within one. Less than a minute later, Syracuse struck again to even the score. Freshman Christina LaCombe swung the puck to senior Ashley Cockell who fired a hard shot toward the net. Junior Lisa Mullan tipped the puck past Colgate's goaltender to send the game to overtime.
In the overtime period, the Orange tallied three shots and allowed two by Colgate, but neither team could manage the game-winning score.
Colgate got on the board first scoring a power-play goal with 3:58 remaining in the first period. SU outshot the Raiders 9-6 in the first 20 minutes and had four man-up opportunities, but Colgate took an early 1-0 lead.
Despite being outshot 15-7 in the second stanza, it was Syracuse that capitalized on its chances. On a SU power-play, junior Megan Skelly deflected a shot from LaCombe into the net to tie the score 1-1 at the 2:35 mark. Mullan scored the go-ahead goal with 8:13 to play in the second half and the Orange held a 2-1 advantage heading into intermission.
Colgate evened the score, 2-2, with 9:39 remaining in regulation which put the momentum in the Raiders' favor. Two more quick Colgate goals put the Raiders up 4-2 with just over three minutes to play, but SU would not go away.
Cockell, LaCombe and junior defender Taylor Metcalfe each finished with two assists. Freshman goaltender Kallie Billadeau made 28 saves in net for the Orange, including two key saves in the overtime period to hold off Colgate's attack.
