Syracuse 2, Mercyhurst 5
ERIE, Pa. – The Syracuse women's ice hockey team (8-10-3, 2-1) was topped by No. 4 Mercyhurst (15-4, 6-0), 5-2, in game-one of a College Hockey America (CHA) series on Friday.
The Lakers tallied the first score of the game just 2:30 into the matchup and quickly took a 2-0 lead. The Orange took advantage of a power-play opportunity and cut Mercyhurst's lead to one (2-1) with 23 seconds remaining in the first period. Sophomore Holly Carrie-Mattimoe found the back of the net on a play started by junior Kelly Dimmen and senior Ashley Cockell. The game marked Cockell's first time playing at the Mercyhurst Ice Center since transferring to Syracuse from Merryhust prior to her senior year.
Despite outshooting the Lakers 9-7 in the second stanza, Mercyhurst netted its third goal and held a 3-1 lead at intermission. Syracuse pulled within one goal once again (3-2) on a third period goal by freshman Akane Hosoyamada. Cockell and junior Megan Skelly earned assists on the score.
Syracuse could not swing the momentum in its favor. Mercyhurst had a late scoring burst and registered two goals in the last eight minutes of play to produce the final score of 5-2.
Freshman goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater turned away a career high-tying 36 shots for SU.
The Orange and the Lakers will meet on the ice again tomorrow (Jan. 8) at 2 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
