SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 21 St. John's scored with a little more than seven minutes remaining in regulation to hand Syracuse (2-8-1, 0-3-1) a 2-1 loss on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at the SU Soccer Stadium. Redshirt sophomore Adrian L'Esperance factored in both goals for the Red Storm, including the game-winner in the 83rd minute.
St. John's (8-3-2, 2-2-0) was the aggressor in the opening minutes and took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Andre Vargas in the 36th minute.
Early in the second half, SU nearly equalized the match, but St. John's keeper Rafael Diaz made a diving stop on rookie Jide Oluyedun to keep Syracuse off the board.
Eventually, SU broke through in the 80th minute and knotted the score at 1-1. After a Red Storm foul, the Orange lined up for free kick just outside the box. Senior Nick Roydhouse capitalized on the opportunity to square the match.
The game wasn't tied for long as the Red Storm reclaimed the lead less than three minutes later. Off a corner kick, L'Esperance headed a ball past SU goalie Phil Boerger for a 2-1 advantage.
Freshman Nick Perea and Roydhouse both had shots on goal in the final seven minutes that would have tied the match, but they were turned away by Diaz.
St. John's ended the game with a 17-14 advantage in shots. Boerger made five saves in goal for the Orange. Diaz recorded three stops for the Red Storm.
The Orange returns to action Saturday, Oct. 15 when it hosts No. 11 USF at the SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Match Notes: Roydhouse's goal was his third of the season ... He leads the team with eight points on the year ... Freshman Hugh Pringle played in his second match of the season, coming on as a reserve in the first half.
