SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 11 USF scored twice in the final 13 minutes of regulation to force overtime and went on to beat the Orange, 3-2. Junior Dom Dwyer tallied his second goal of the night less than four minutes into OT to win it for the Bulls.
Facing a nationally-ranked opponent for the third straight game, the Orange (2-9-1, 0-4-1) took it to USF (9-2-2, 4-0-1) in the early going. SU had a goal called off in the 11th minute for offside, but broke through in the 18th minute when junior Louis Clark finished a Nick Roydhouse serve off a corner kick.
A little less than nine minutes later, Clark struck again. This time he collected a pass from junior Ted Cribley and tapped it past USF keeper Chris Blais for his second goal.
Ahead by two, Orange goalie Phil Boerger made three saves in the first 30 minutes of the second half to keep the Bulls at bay. But finally, with time winding down, USF got on the board. The Bulls were awarded a penalty kick in the 78th minute after a Syracuse foul in the box, and Dwyer caught Boerger guessing to cut the SU lead to 2-1.
Then, with only a 1:41 to play, Dwyer played a through ball towards the SU goal. After a failed clear attempt by the Orange, USF freshman Roberto Alterio tucked the ball into right side of the goal to tie the game.
That set the stage for Dwyer, who scored 3:26 into overtime off a corner kick to lift the Bulls to a stunning 3-2 victory.
The two teams combined for 33 shots in the match. USF had 17, while the Orange attempted 16. Boerger made five saves for Syracuse. Blais recorded six for USF.
Syracuse returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19 when the team travels to Rutgers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Yurcak Field.
Match Notes: Clark's two goals tied his career ... His multi-goal game was the first for a Syracuse player since Mark Brode had two goals against Colgate on Oct. 6, 2010 .. Roydhouse's assist on Clark's first goal was his team-leading ninth point of the year ... Cribley was credited with his team-best fourth assist on Clark's second score.
