Syracuse placed fifth in the ESPN/USA Today Poll announced this week. The Orange earned 649 points, just behind fellow BIG EAST Conference member Connecticut (655), the defending NCAA Champion.
North Carolina received all but one (30) of the first-place votes to claim the top spot. Kentucky earned the other top nod, and was second, ahead of Ohio State.
Other BIG EAST teams in the preseason poll included Louisville (8th), Pittsburgh (11th), Marquette (21) and Cincinnati (22nd). Villanova, West Virginia, St. John's and Notre Dame were among other programs receiving votes.
Syracuse begins the exhibition portion of its schedule by hosting Cal State-L.A. on Tuesday, November 1, in the Carrier Dome at 7:00 p.m. Former SU standout Stevie Thompson coaches the Division II visitors.
