LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Syracuse (2-7-1, 0-2-1) and No. 11 Louisville (7-3-1, 0-2-1) played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Cardinal Park. With the draw, each team recorded their first points in the BIG EAST standings.
Senior goalkeeper Phil Boerger made seven saves to earn his first shutout of the season, and the ninth clean sheet of his career.
The host Cardinals controlled the majority of action in the first half. Louisville outshot Syracuse, 14-9. The play of Boerger helped keep the match scoreless. He made two saves in the opening period.
Both sides had opportunities to take the lead in the second half. Boerger turned away a shot from Cardinal senior Colin Rolfe three minutes into the period. In the 68th minute, SU senior Dan Summers headed a ball toward the Louisville goal. Cardinal keeper Andre Boudreaux made the save to keep the match scoreless.
The back-and-forth continued into the latter stages of regulation. In the 79th minute, freshman Chris Makowski had a ball hit the crossbar. Six minutes later, Kenney Walker's strike was stopped by Boerger.
For the second consecutive game, and fifth time this season, the Orange headed to overtime. Three minutes into the extra session, Makowski had a chance to win the game, but his shot sailed right of the goal. In the 98th minute, Boerger saved a shot from junior Ryan Smith to keep the Cardinals off the board.
In the second OT, junior Louis Clark had a great opportunity to give Syracuse the victory, but was turned away by Boudreaux. In the final two minutes, Boerger made two more saves to preserve the shutout.
Louisville held the advantage in shots for the game, 31-23. Boudreaux totaled three saves in the match for his sixth clean sheet of the year.
Match Notes: It was the Orange's first draw of the season and the first in all-time series against the Cardinals ... With his seven saves, Boerger now has 150 saves in his career ... The draw marked the first tie for Syracuse against a nationally-ranked opponent since 2006 ... On Sept. 27, 2006, SU played No. 23 St. John's to a 1-1 tie.
