SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Fab Melo had a team-high 12 point and added eight rebounds as No. 5 Syracuse defeated Cal State Los Angeles 79-49 in its first exhibition game of the season on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome.
Melo scored eight of his 12 points in the first half and converted the first three SU field goals of the game. The sophomore also contributed two blocks and a steal in 17 minutes of work.
Kris Joseph and Dion Waiters joined Melo in double-digits with11 and 10 points, respectively. Scoop Jardine pitched in with nine points and a game-high seven assists.
Syracuse took a 29-22 lead into halftime and held CSULA to 25 percent shooting on 7-of -28 from the floor in the first half. SU's defense forced 11 first half Golden Eagle turnovers and blocked seven shots.
With the Orange up 11 in the second half, a 16-5 run jumpstarted by a Joseph layup broke the game open and gave SU a 56-34 lead. The Orange outscored Cal State LA 50-27 in the second half.
SU never trailed in the game had 13 players see action while 11 different players scored. CSULA's Quinton Watkins tallied a game-high 15 points.
