SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The fifth-ranked Orange (1-0) hosts Manhattan (1-0) in the opening round of the NIT Preseason Tipoff on Monday, November 14. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. It's the second game of a doubleheader. Albany and Brown will play in the first game at 4 p.m.
The game will be broadcast on ESPNU. Tickets for Monday's game are available online, by phone (1-888-DOMETIX) or in person at the Carrier Dome Box Office. Fans can follow the action on the Syracuse IMG Radio Network and its flagship TK99 (99.5 FM). The audio stream of the broadcast will be available on Orange All Access on SUathletics.com. NEARING A MILESTONE
Senior Kris Joseph needs just four points to become the 55th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Joseph tallied 16 points in the Orange's season opener against Fordham, increasing his career point total to 996. The last player to join the 1,000-point club was Rick Jackson last season. Syracuse's 54 current 1,000-point scorers is the fifth-highest total in the nation. Louisville and North Carolina both have 65, followed by Duke (60) and Kentucky (57).
A LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse won its seventh consecutive season opener on Saturday, November 12 with a 78-53 victory against Fordham. The Orange displayed a balanced offense as 11 different players scored, led by Kris Joseph and Dion Waiters, who recorded 16 points each.
Syracuse jumped out to an 18-8 lead and took a 32-19 lead into the locker room at halftime. Waiters paced the Orange in the second half, scoring nine of the team's 11 points in a three-minute span, as he scored 11 of his 14 points after intermission. SU led by as many as 30 on two different occasions on its way to the 25-point win.
Junior Brandon Triche tallied nine points and led the Orange with seven rebounds, including five on the offensive end. Sophomore #C.J. Fair# also had nine points to go along with five rebounds, and junior James Southerland finished with seven points and four rebounds. Freshman Rakeem Christmas scored five points and pulled down six rebounds in his first official collegiate action, while sophomore center Fab Melo had four of Syracuse's seven blocks.
SCOUTING MANHATTAN
The Jaspers defeated NJIT, 62-48, in its season opener on Saturday, November 12. Junior guard George Beamon posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Donovan Kates scored 10 points in his debut.
Head coach Stev eMasiello is in his first season at Manhattan. He took over the helm of the Jaspers' program after spending six years as assistant coach at Louisville. During his tenure at UofL, he helped guide the Cardinals to six consecutive 20-win seasons and four NCAA Tournament appearances. Masiello also served as an assistant coach at Manhattan from 2001-05. He is a 2000 graduate of Kentucky.
THE SERIES
Syracuse leads the all-time series with Manhattan, 20-7 and has won 10 consecutive games against the Jaspers. Manhattan's last win against the Orange was a 94-80 win on Feb. 4, 1965. The last time the two teams met was on Nov. 30, 2005 when Syracuse defeated the Jaspers, 87-82 in overtime.
