SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Kris Joseph became the 55th player in program history to record 1,000 points and #5/5 Syracuse (2-0) defeated Manhattan (1-1) 92-56 in the first round of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-off Tournament Monday night at the Carrier Dome.
Joseph entered the game four points shy of 1,000 and reached the milestone with a corner three at the 9:03 mark of the first half. He poured in 11 of his 15 points in the first half and also grabbed seven rebounds for the game.
SU had 42 fast break points to Manhattan's 10 and turned 28 Jasper turnovers into 40 points. SU outscored Manhattan 48-14 in the paint and had five players score in double figures, led by Dion Waiters, who had a game-high 17 points. Waiters helped the Syracuse bench outscore the Jasper's reserves, 50-18.
SU built a first-half cushion with a 24-3 spurt to take a 32-11 lead at the under-eight-minute timeout. Joseph had seven points during that run, while Waiters had six and Brandon Triche had five. Triche led all scorers with 12 points at the break and SU took a 52-26 lead into the locker room.
It took the Orange close to seven minutes to make its first field goal of the second half, but SU was 9-of-11 from the free-throw line in that span. The Orange gained its largest lead of 75-35 with 9:33 remaining in the second half.
James Southerland had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists while Triche finished with 12 points. Fab Melo was the fifth SU player to reach double-digits with 11 points and he also had a career-high nine rebounds and four blocks.
Manhattan was led by Kidani Brutus with a team-high 15 points. George Beamon joined him in double-digit scoring with 14 points and added a team-high five rebounds.
In the first game of the evening, the University of Albany received 29 points from Gerardo Suero to help the Great Danes defeat Brown University 77-68.
Syracuse and Albany will square off Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN3) with a berth to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden on the line. Brown and Manhattan will meet at 4:00 p.m.
