SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The #5/5 Orange men's basketball team (4-0) defeated Colgate (1-2), 92-47, on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Carrier Dome. With the victory, Syracuse has won 46 consecutive games against the Raiders, the longest active streak in Division I.
Syracuse had four players in double figures, including three reserves. Sophomore guard Dion Waiters came off the bench to tally a team-best 16 points, junior forward James Southerland had 14 in a reserve roll and sophomore forward #C.J. Fair# had 13 points as a sub. Redshirt senior guard Scoop Jardine was the lone starter in double digits and finished with 11 points, six assists and three steals without a turnover.
In all, the Syracuse bench outscored the reserves from Colgate, 60-9.
The game did not start easily for the Orange as the hosts fell behind 6-2 and saw the score knotted at 8-8 with 16:43 left in the first half. Syracuse managed to work its advantage to 20-13 at the 10:59 mark and then took off on a 32-6 run. Southerland sparked the run, scoring nine points in a 42-second span. SU entered the intermission with a 52-19 lead.
The Orange extended the strong stretch in the second half, outscoring the visitors 25-15 in the first 13:21 of the period. With its final basket of the game, a Matt Tomaszewksi three-point field goal, the team took its largest lead of the day at 45 points.
Syracuse's defense, and its press in particular, caused problems for Colgate. The Orange forced 26 Raider turnovers and had a 31-2 edge in points off of turnovers. SU also limited the Raiders to 18-of-35 from the field (.340).
Sophomore Pat Moore paced the visitors, scoring 19 points. Sterling Melville added eight points and five boards.
Syracuse is back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 25 in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off semifinals against Virginia Tech. Game time is set for 9:30 p.m. at Madison Square Garden (ESPN2). Oklahoma State will play Stanford in the evening's first semifinal contest at 7:00 p.m.
