With an extra attacker on the ice with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Margot Scharfe cut the Ohio State lead to 4-3, but the Syracuse ice hockey team (5-9-0) could not complete the comeback as the Buckeyes swept the Orange on Saturday at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Jenesica Drinkwater made 35 saves for SU, which will travel to Rensselaer next weekend for a two-game set.
Ohio State outshot the Orange 39-22 for the game and was 0-of-2 on the power play while the Orange was 0-of-3.
The Orange came out hard early in the first period, pressuring the Ohio State defense and generating scoring opportunities. Allie LaCombe put SU on top 7:49 into the frame when she positioned herself on the doorstep and hammered home a loose puck off a shot from Jordyn Burns past Ohio State goaltender Chelsea Knapp for the score.
The Buckeyes would respond, however, with two goals from McIntosh just 70 seconds apart. The first came more than three minutes after the LaCombe tally as McIntosh finished off a give-and-go with Natalie Spooner on a wrist shot that beat Drinkwater shortside.
McIntosh followed that up with her second of the night not long after as she collected a feed from Madison Marcotte and fired a shot in the same location as her first goal for her sixth of the season.
Drinkwater would keep the Orange in the game throughout the second period, making 13 saves on shots from all angles. Syracuse would even the score at two six minutes into the frame when Julie Knerr picked up her second goal of the year. After Jessica Sorensen's initial bid was sent out in front of the crease, Knerr quickly collected the puck, spun around and snuck a low shot through the pads of Knapp.
Ohio State retook the lead with 7:36 left in the stanza immediately after killing off a body checking penalty as Hokey Langan took a rink-wide pass from Sara Schmitt after Langan exited the penalty box. Langan skated in on a breakaway and snapped a shot by Drinkwater for her third goal of the season.
Ally Tarr would extend the Buckeyes' lead to 4-2 midway through the period when she followed her original shot from the left side to find a loose puck sitting in front of the net, where she then tucked it past Drinkwater for her sixth goal of the year.
The Orange pulled Drinkwater in favor of the extra skater with less than 1:30 left in regulation, and Scharfe found herself in the right place after Shiann Darkangelo's shot from the point rang off the crossbar. Scharfe settled the bouncing puck and put it past Knapp before she could recover. SU, however, could not net the equalizer in the waning seconds in a six-on-five skating advantage.
