Looking to end a three-game skid, the Syracuse ice hockey team hits the road for a weekend series with Rensselaer, beginning Friday night at Houston Field House. The Orange is a sweep at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes last weekend at Tennity Ice Pavilion, 6-3 and 4-3.
Storylines Vs. Rensselaer:
Rensselaer enters this weekend against the Orange at 3-9-4, including a 1-3-2 mark in ECAC play. The Engineers dropped both games against Wisconsin, the nation's top team, last weekend.
Jordan Smelker and Alisa Harrison have paced the RPI offensive attack so far this season. Smelker has four goals and eight assists while Harrison has added five goals and six assists. Eleeza Cox leads the Engineers with six goals this season, including two power play tallies and one game winning goal. Rensselaer has relied on a tandem of freshman goalies this season. Kelly O'Brien is 2-5-1 this season with a 2.30 goals against average and .912 save percentage while Briaana Piper boasts a 1-4-3 mark with a 2.77 goals against average and .889 save percentage.
John Burke is in his ninth season behind the bench at Rensselaer. He is 86-63-15 all-time with the Engineers, and is 1-2-1 against the Orange is his career.
Freshman Setting The Pace:
Syracuse has seven freshmen on its roster for the 2011-12 season, and the new members of the Orange are already making an impact on the score sheet. Allie LaCombe (five goals, three assists) leads the freshman attack for SU, and is 32nd in the nation among rookie scorers. Casey Hirsch (two goals, four assists) and Shiann Darkangelo (six assists) trail close behind. The Orange freshmen have accounted for 12 goals and 26 assists this season, which is 40.0% of Syracuse's total scoring.
Carrie-Mattimoe Is Clutch On The Power Play:
Junior forward Holly Carrie-Mattimoe has six goals and three assists this season. Of her six goals, three have come on the power play. Carrie-Mattimoe has 13 career power play tallies, two shy of tying Julie Rising's school record of 15. Carrie-Mattimoe is currently tied for 16th in the nation in power play goals.
Greco Moves To Forward:
Following an early season injury to Lisa Mullan, junior Jacquie Greco moved up to right wing from defense. Greco has one assist since making the move, and has seen a majority of her ice time as part of Syracuse's checking line. Greco has one goal and two assists in 63 career games with the Orange.
Carrie-Mattimoe And Knerr Named To CHA Honor Roll:
After their performances against Ohio State last weekend, Syracuse forwards Holly Carrie-Mattimoe and Julie Knerr were named to the CHA Honor Roll on Monday. Carrie-Mattimoe had two goals and an assist against the Buckeyes, including a power play goal with 4.3 seconds left in the first period on Friday. Her three power play goals this season is tied for 16th in the nation, while her 13 career power play goals is second all-time at Syracuse … Carrie-Mattimoe has four points in her last three games (three goals, one assist), and is tied for 56th in the country in goals per game (0.43).
Knerr had a goal and an assist last weekend in two games against Ohio State. Her goal came on Saturday in the second period, which tied the game at two, and she also assisted on SU's final goal late in the third period.
