Behind a 36-24 advantage in shots and 23 saves from sophomore goaltender Kallie Billadeau, the Syracuse ice hockey team battled Robert Morris to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon at the RMU Island Sports Center. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season for the Orange (8-11-1, 0-1-1 CHA), which will have three weeks off before taking on Colgate on Jan. 2.
"We had a solid effort today on both sides of the puck," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We played hard from start to finish and earned a tough point on the road."
SU won the faceoff matchup for the second straight game with a 31-28 edge, and was 0-of-6 on the power play. The Colonials were also 0-of-6 on the man advantage.
Following a scoreless first period, Carrie-Mattimoe gave the Orange a 1-0 lead just 3:21 into the second stanza when she took a feed from Margot Scharfe and buried a shot past RMU goaltender Kristen DiCiocco (35 saves) for the score.
The lead was short lived, however, as Robert Morris knotted the score at one two minutes after the Carrie-Mattimoe tally with a goal from Rebecca Vint on a wrist shot that got past Billadeau.
The Orange peppered DiCiocco with 12 shots during the third period, and had three power plays during the final frame, but could not get one past the RMU netminder, sending the game into overtime.
SU again outshot the Colonials in the extra five minutes, 7-4, but once again DiCiocco was there to backstop Robert Morris in the final minutes.
