HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Sparked by a four-goal second period and 33 saves by Kimberly Sass, Colgate (7-10-1) shutout the Syracuse ice hockey team (8-12-1) on Monday night at Starr Rink, 5-0. Jenesica Drinkwater (nine saves) and Kallie Billadeau (15 saves) split time in goal for the Orange, which will return to CHA play this weekend against No. 5 Mercyhurst beginning on Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
SU outshot the Raiders 33-29 for the game, and won 32-of-60 faceoffs. Syracuse was 0-of-5 on the power play while Colgate went 0-of-6.
Despite a narrow 12-8 shot advantage through the first period, the Orange dominated the style of play early in the frame, maintaining puck possession in the Colgate defensive zone and generating multiple scoring chances. SU's best chance of the stanza came seven minutes in as Taylor Metcalfe sent a low shot from the point in on goal. Margot Scharfe, positioned in front of the cage, redirected the puck, sending it off the crossbar and into the corner.
The Syracuse penalty killing unit was put to the test late in the period as SU was forced to kill off three minor infractions. The Raiders threw six shots on goal during their man advantages, but Drinkwater was there to turn them aside.
Syracuse thought it had taken a 1-0 late in the frame as Lisa Mullan one-timed a shot past Colgate goaltender Kimberly Sass as time expired. Officials reviewed the play, eventually overturning the original call and disallowing the goal.
The Colgate offense exploded during the second period, scoring four times on tallies from four different scorers. The first came 2:17 into the frame as Melissa Kueber skated the down left side of the ice, then quickly cut across the crease and tucked the puck inside the right post for her ninth of the season.
The Raiders would make it 2-0 just 68 seconds later on a controversial goal from Shannon Doyle. After taking a feed from Brittany Phillips, Doyle pounded the puck into the pads of Drinkwater. Drinkwater's momentum, however, carried her and the puck across the goal line for a 2-0 Colgate lead. The goal was reviewed and stood as called.
With 48 seconds left in the stanza, the Raiders would take a commanding three-score lead as Jenna Klynstra ripped a shot over the shoulder of Billadeau, who replaced Drinkwater midway through the period, and into the top right corner for Klynstra's second goal of the season. Taylor Volpe potted her sixth of the season with 14 seconds to go on a wrist shot into the same location as Klynstra's tally.
Colgate extended its lead to five 9:48 into the third period as Phillips netted her ninth goal of the season off a faceoff draw in the SU defensive zone that beat Billadeau for the score.
