Led by Iasia Hemingway's career-high 31 points and fourth double-double of the season, the Syracuse women's basketball team (11-4) ran away with an 83-32 win against Colgate (3-12) on Saturday at the Carrier Dome.
“We did a good job of playing hard,” head coach Quentin Hillsman said. “The fans were into the game and that really helped us.”
Hemingway, who added a season-high 13 rebounds, was 10-of-18 from the floor and a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line.
“She did a great job creating offense for herself and for the team,” Hillsman said. “Everything she did was with a purpose.”
Nine different players entered the scoring column for the Orange, while three registered double-digit efforts. Carmen Tyson-Thomas collected her second straight double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Kayla Alexander tallied 12 points (10 in the second half).
The Orange shot 30-of-70 from the floor for the game, while the SU defense held the Raiders to 22% (13-of-60) shooting. Using a 58-31 edge in rebounds (25 offensive), Syracuse was able to outscore Colgate 46-12 in the paint.
Kelly Reid and Jhazmine Lynch led all Colgate scorers with eight points as SU held the Raiders to 14 first half points, the lowest for an SU opponent since Delaware State last season.
The Orange bolted out to a 10-0 advantage early in the second half with baskets from four different players, including a three-pointer from Tyson-Thomas to open the scoring.
Syracuse built its lead to 28 thanks to a 24-4 run during a 12 minute span, during which the Orange made 10 free throws.
Hemingway continued her hot shooting in the second half, adding 16 more points, as SU compiled an 18-2 run midway through the half to maintain its lead. Charon Singleton made her collegiate debut for SU late in the second half.
Syracuse returns to BIG EAST play on Tuesday when the Orange travels to Rutgers for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
