SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The NR/RV Syracuse Orange women's basketball team (6-3, 0-1 BIG EAST) returns to non-conference play on Saturday when it hosts Coppin State (2-6, 0-1 MEAC) at 1 p.m. in the front end of a day-night doubleheader with the men's basketball team at the Carrier Dome.
• A ticket to the women's game is valid for free admission to the 7 p.m. men's game against George Washington.
• The contest can be heard live on SU's flagship station ESPN 97.7 FM/1200 AM with Brian Higgins '04 on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on Syracuse's student station, WJPZ 89.1 FM. SERIES HISTORY
• This is the 22nd meeting all-time between the Orange and Mountaineers with WVU leading the series, 12-9. SU is 4-5 at home in the series.
• The teams first played on December 2, 1995 in the Carrier Classic. Syracuse won 101-38 in one of the largest margins of victory in program history.
• The teams played again on Nov. 17, 2007 in the Preseason WNIT at North Carolina with the Orange winning its season opener, 69-65. Chandrea Jones led the Orange with 17 points while Fantasia Goodwin and Nicole Michael each recorded double-doubles.
SCOUTING COPPIN STATE
• The Eagles are 2-6 overall and 0-1 in the MEAC after falling at Howard (63-52) on Dec. 3. They are coming off a 61-59 loss at home to Towson on Wednesday. Coppin State is 0-4 on its opponents' home courts.
• Coppin State is led by 6-3 senior center Jeanine Manley. She leads the team in scoring at 11.1 ppg and in rebounds with 6.3 per game.
• 6-0 senior forward Crystal Whittington joins Manley on the front line, scoring 7.0 ppg and hauling in 5.8 rebounds per contest.
• Derek Brown is in his 13th year as head coach of the Eagles. He is 195-163 in his career and lead Coppin State to a 13-17 overall record in 2010-11.
• The Eagles were picked sixth in the MEAC preseason poll and garnered one first place vote.
NON-CONFERENCE HOME STREAK
• Syracuse has won 45 non-conference home games in a row, dating back to the 2006-07 season, Quentin Hillsman's first season as head coach at SU. He is 47-5 in his career in such games.
• The Orange is 4-0 this season in out-of-conference play at the Dome.
• SU's last non-conference home loss was on Dec. 22, 2006 to Canisius (56-43).
• Last season SU was 14-0, 12-0 in 2009-10, 8-0 in 2008-09, and 7-0 in 2007-08.
NOVEMBER TO REMEMBER
• Syracuse posted a perfect record in November for the third consecutive year (6-0). The Orange is 23-3 (.885) in November since the 2007-08 campaign. SU's last loss in November was a 58-57 setback against Alaska Anchorage on Nov. 26, 2008.
TOUGH IN DECEMBER
• The Orange has been almost unstoppable in the month of December in recent years. Since the 2007-08 season, SU is 28-4 in December games for an amazing .875 winning percentage.
• Between Dec. 30, 2006 and Dec. 11, 2010, Syracuse won 26 December games in a row under Quentin Hillsman. The final win of that streak was a 75-66 upset of No. 6 Ohio State before it ended with a 77-43 loss to No. 2 Baylor on Dec. 21, 2010.
DOMINATING THE GLASS
• Dominant rebounding has become the norm for the Orange in recent years. Syracuse led the NCAA in rebounding margin last season at +13.4 per game.
• Syracuse leads the BIG EAST in rebounds and rebounding margin this season. The Orange averages 51.4 rebounds per game, well ahead of second place West Virginia (45.8 rpg.). Syracuse is outrebounding its opponents by an average of 14.6 rebounds per game. Last season Syracuse led the nation in rebounding margin. SU outrebounded 31 of its 35 opponents by an average of 13.4.
• Nationally, Syracuse led the nation in rebounds per game and ranked fifth in rebound margin at the beginning of the week.
• SU has four of the top 20 rebounders in the BIG EAST (6. Kayla Alexander, 8.6; T14. Shakeya Leary, 7.0; T14. Carmen Tyson-Thomas, 7.0; and No. 19 Elashier Hall, 6.7).
IN THE POLLS
• Syracuse received one vote in this week's ESPN/USA TODAY coaches' poll. The Orange has received votes in all four coaches' polls this season.
• The Orange received a season-high 19 points in the ESPN/USA TODAY coaches' poll released on Nov. 21.
• Last season, Syracuse returned to the top 25 when it earned a No. 24 ranking in the Dec. 13 Associated Press poll after upsetting No. 6 Ohio State at home. That was the first time the Orange had been ranked in the top 25 since Feb. 8, 2008. Syracuse remained in the media poll's top 25 for five consecutive weeks. In addition, the Orange was ranked No. 25 in the Feb. 1 ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll.
DOME SWEET DOME
• Syracuse has a record of 58-26 (.690) in the Carrier Dome since 2006-07. The Orange was nearly unbeatable on its home court last season, posting a 20-2 record in the Dome.
• This season, SU is 4-1 in the Dome.
UP NEXT
• Syracuse does not play a game for a week. The Orange will next play on Dec. 18-20 in Las Vegas, Nev. at the Duel In The Desert, hosted by UNLV. SU will face Xavier on Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. ET, No. 24 Oklahoma on Dec. 19 at 5:30 p.m. ET, and Ohio on Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. ET.
