I'll admit it. I skipped my writing assignment last week. If you don't have anything nice to say… I thought for sure they'd be something good to write about this week. Well, I was wrong. I jinxed myself and probably the entire basketball program. I won't let it happen again… I hope.
How will this team be remembered? The team that willed their way to an 18-0 start or the one that has virtually collapsed during its current 0-4 streak. The nattering nabobs of negativity are already whispering the dreaded acronym… N… I… T. But there's still a lot of basketball left to play and now it's up to the players. Can they regain their confidence and play as a team? Who knows? But it will certainly be an interesting ride.
Basketball is a game of runs. Teams score in spurts. First one team and then the other. Who's ever in the lead at the final buzzer wins. And the season is much the same. The vast majority of teams have winning streaks AND losing streaks, especially in a conference as competitive as the Big East. It's how we finish the season that matters.
Yes it's coach-speak. Of course it's cliché. But that doesn't mean it's not the absolute truth. This team only has one choice: take one game at a time. Work hard every day and come to play. The shots will fall or they won't. But the team has history on its side. No Syracuse team has ever gone 0-13 to end a season (I didn't actually look that up. I'm just hoping against hope that it's true).
