SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Alessondra Parra weathered a marathon match against an unrelenting Binghamton challenger before throttling her Colgate opponent in singles play that would help the Syracuse tennis team to a 4-3 victory against the Bearcats and a 7-0 sweep of the Raiders. Parra's heroics were only part of an exhausting, two-win doubleheader for the Orange Friday night at the Drumlins Tennis Center.
Playing at the No. 1 singles spot, Parra faced Binghamton's Anna Edelman in a match that stretched to three sets, each with a 7-5 tiebreaker. The first set went to Edelman after a 6-6 tie and the ensuing 7-5 tiebreak. The second set featured the same back-and-forth play and led to another 6-6 tie, this time with Parra winning the 7-5 tiebreak. Parra commanded the lead in the third set until Edelman pushed back and forced another 7-5 tiebreaking round, with Parra eventually taking the match with a final score of 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 7-6(5). Parra's singles point was the final push that sealed Syracuse's victory against Binghamton after a match that featured heated competition at virtually every position.
Freshman Maddie Kobelt lost to Binghamton's Jillian Santos at the No. 2 singles spot after trading 6-3 sets and eventually losing in the third, 6-7, after Santos won the tiebreaker, 5-3. Junior captain Emily Harman and her Bearcat challenger, Lauren Bates, also had a three-set match at the No. 3 singles spot. After losing the first set, 4-6, Harman pushed the second set to a 6-6 tie and won the tiebreaker, 7-5. She went on to seal the victory with a 7-5 win in the third set.
Senior captain Christina Tan and freshman Aleah Marrow each lost their matches at the No. 5 and No. 4 singles spots, respectively. Tan lost her match with a score of 5-7, 6-7(5), while Marrow was beat by Binghamton's Yulia Smirnova in straight sets of 3-6, 2-6.
Fellow co-captain Simone Kalhorn added another singles point after she defeated Emma Leibowicz in straight sets of 6-2 and 6-0.
Syracuse won the doubles point with its No. 1 pairing of Harman and Kobelt and No. 3 pairing of freshman Eva Raszkiewicz and Marrow. Both pairs won their matches by a score of 8-2. Parra and Kalhorn teamed up at the No. 2 spot but lost to Binghamton's duo of Santos and Smirnova, 1-8.
The Orange rose to the occasion and roared back in their second match of the night, sweeping the Raiders 7-0. Colgate failed to win a single match in both doubles and singles play. Parra, Kobelt and Harman played at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, and each won in straight sets. Kobelt and Harman each won in straight 6-0 sets, while Parra won in straight sets of 6-1 and 6-0. Kalhorn swept her Colgate opponent in straight sets of 6-0 at the No. 5 spot while Tan and Raskiewicz each added wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, respectively.
Harman and Kobelt teamed up at the No. 1 doubles spot and defeated Colgate's pairing of Stephanie Bender and Alex Petrini, 8-2. At the No. 2 position, Parra and Kalhorn had a convincing 8-3 win over Kelsey Shea and Stephanie Brown and senior Jacquelynn Tang paired with Tan at the No. 3 spot to defeat Colgate's Jen Marquit and Becky Silvers by a 8-4 margin.
Friday's two wins pushes the Orange to a 4-1 overall record on the season with a 1-0 mark in the BIG EAST. Syracuse returns to the court next weekend with a three-day, three-match home stand at the Drumlins Tennis Center. The Orange kicks off its slate with a BIG EAST matchup against Seton Hall on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. before taking on Buffalo at 3 p.m. on Saturday and another BIG EAST foe, Cincinnati, at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
