PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Orange redshirt junior attackman Tim Desko and senior goalie John Galloway have been recognized by the BIG EAST Conference for their performances in SU's 12-10 win over Virginia. Desko was selected as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, March 7 and Galloway was named to the league's weekly honor roll.
Desko earned offensive player of the week honors for the first time in his career after tallying a personal-best five goals against the Cavaliers. He scored three of SU's five second-half goals to lead the Orange to its first regular-season win against Virginia since 2004. Overall, Desko shot 62.5 percent for the game, scoring on five of his eight attempts. He leads the Orange with 10 goals in three games this season after scoring 12 goals in 11 games last year.
Desko is the second consecutive Orange student-athlete to be named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Sophomore JoJo Marasco received the honor last Monday for his performance against Army.
This is the second straight week Galloway has been picked to the honor roll. He made nine saves against Virginia and anchored an SU defense that held the Cavaliers to 6.8 goals below their season average. The victory was the 47th of Galloway's career, tying Jay Pfeifer's school wins record and matching Pfeifer for the third-most wins by a Division I goalkeeper in NCAA history.
Syracuse opens BIG EAST Conference play on Saturday, March 12 against Georgetown at the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic. The game is slated for 11 a.m. at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium. It will be televised live nationally on ESPNU.
