
Orange Shines At Sun Angel Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Syracuse University track and field team competed at the Sun Angel Classic, hosted by Arizona State University, on April 8 and 9. Three members of the Orange squad finished first in their respective heats, while seven placed in the top-10 overall. Seven BIG EAST qualifying marks were recorded and three field athletes met ECAC and IC4A standards.
Junior Ieva Staponkute recorded SU's highest finish, taking second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.12 meters. She met BIG EAST and ECAC standards for the second time this season. Freshman SaDe Lewis took second in her heat and ninth overall in the 100-meter hurdles with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 14.65.
In the 200-meter dash, senior Lareea Chisholm won her heat and placed 15th overall with a time of 25.80. Freshman Amber Passalaqua took sixth in her heat and 18th overall with a time of 15.37. Chisholm also competed in the 100-meter dash, crossing the finish line at 12.71 to earn fourth in her heat and 12th overall. Freshman Ashley Keyes followed Chisholm across the finish line at 12.85, finishing eighth in the heat and 16th overall.
On the men's side, junior Mark Melilli placed eighth in the javelin with a throw of 61.20 meters. He bested his BIG EAST qualifying throw from the Sam Howell Invitational by more than four meters, qualifying for IC4A competition.
Sophomore Frank Taylor won his flight in the long jump and went on to place eighth overall with a personal-best, BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying leap of 7.11 meters. Taylor also recorded a personal-best and BIG EAST qualifying time of 15.07 in the 110-meter hurdles, placing third in his heat and 13th overall. Freshman Donald Pollitt crossed the finish line just ahead of Taylor at 14.97 to place second in the heat and ninth overall. Pollitt also won his heat in the 100-meter dash and took 10th overall with a time of 22.51.
In the 100-meter dash, senior Sham Lewis met BIG EAST qualifying standards with a time of 10.96, earning a fourth-place finish in his heat and sixth-place finish overall.
The Orange will be back in action on April 15 and 16 with members of its squad competing in the Auburn War Eagle Invitational and the Kent Taylor-Joe Hilton Carolina Invitational.
