SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite an early rain delay, Syracuse (28-10, 7-5) was able to get its in two scheduled games against BIG EAST foe Villanova (15-25-1, 2-11) on Saturday, April 16. Behind a complete game effort from junior Jenna Caira, the Orange defeated the Wildcats, 2-0, in the first game. In the second game, SU ran out to an early lead and never looked back, taking a 10-1 mercy-rule victory in five innings.
In game one, Caira struck out nine, yielded only two hits, and walked one. The ace did not allow a Villanova runner to reach base safely until the fifth inning. With two outs and runners on first and third base, Caira struck out Wildcats' second baseman Brittany Ewing to get out of the inning.
Junior Stephanie Watts led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a single. Watts advanced to third on a base hit by junior Lacey Kohl. After an errant throw by Villanova catcher Amanda Marquez, Watts was able to score. Syracuse extended its lead on a solo-home run by freshman Jasmine Watson in the sixth.
The Wildcats would not go quietly, attempting to mount a rally in the seventh inning. After Villanova first baseman Valerie Ortega doubled and designated player Molly Manning reached on an error, the Wildcats had runners on first and third base with two outs. Caira struck out Villanova right fielder Julie Smith to end the threat.
In game two, Syracuse erupted for ten runs against Villanova. The Orange had ten hits in the later game, nine of which were extra-base hits, including four home runs. Junior Kelly Saco and Watson each led the team with three RBI in the game. Cairo got her second win of the day. She allowed one earned run, two hits, struck out five, and walked one in four innings of work.
The offense started early for the Orange. Through the first three innings, SU scored nine runs on nine hits. Watts, Saco and Watson each had a homerun during this span, accounting for six of the nine runs scored. Junior Lisaira Daniels had two RBI on a first-inning double and third-inning single. Senior Hallie Gibbs also had an RBI on two-bagger in the first inning.
Villanova did tally one run in the fourth inning to cut the Syracuse lead to 9-1. The Orange responded with a solo homerun by Watson, her third of the day, in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Sophomore Stacy Kuwik pitched the last inning for SU. Kuwik finished with two strikeouts in her one inning of work.
Syracuse will return to the SU Softball Stadium on Sunday to finish up its three-game series against Villanova. Action is scheduled to begin at noon.
