SYRACUSE – The Syracuse University softball team pushed its winning streak to five with its 6-0 victory against BIG EAST foe Villanova today at the SU Softball Stadium. Junior pitcher Jenna Caira struck out six and allowed only one hit in five scoreless innings of action for the Orange. Syracuse improved to 29-11 overall and 8-5 in the BIG EAST. Villanova moved to 15-26-1, 2-12.
Two singles and a two-RBI double by junior catcher Lacy Kohl to begin the bottom of the first inning gave the Orange a 2-0 lead. Senior leftfielder Rachel Helman platted SU's third run of the inning with a ball to the right-side of the infield, allowing freshman pinch runner Katie Pires to score.
Senior third baseman Hallie Gibbs pushed the score to 5-0 with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth. It was her seventh home run of the season. She also leads the team with 41 RBIs.
A triple by sophomore center fielder Veronica Grant to open the sixth inning put the Orange in prime position for its sixth run of the day. She was brought home by junior outfielder Leah Porter.
The Orange returns to action April 22 at Massachusetts. Play is set to begin at 2 p.m.
