SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Members of the Syracuse University track and field team will participate in the Cornell Upstate Challenge, while others will compete at the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational this weekend. Competition in Ithaca, N.Y. will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 23. Action at Princeton will start on Friday, April 22 at 3 p.m. and resume again on Saturday at 12 a.m.
Among the athletes competing in Cornell, 13 have already qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in their respective events.
Senior heptathlete Kelsey Rubeor is ranked second at the conference. She will compete in three heptathlon events that she had already qualified for this outdoor season. Junior Ieva Staponkute will take action in the field. She still tops the conference in the triple jump. Freshman SaDe Lewis, ranked top-10 in the BIG EAST, will compete in 100 meter hurdles after hitting her personal-best of 14.43s at last weekend's Auburn War Eagle Invite. Seniors Flings Owusu-Agyapong and Lareea Chisholm and freshman Ashley Keyes also qualified for BIG EAST competition last weekend. They will represent the Orange in sprinting events.
On the men's side, freshman Donald Pollitt and junior Matt Callanan will compete in 110 meter hurdles. At last weekend's Auburn War Eagle Invite, they both met BIG EAST standards with personal-best times of 14.18s and 14.28s respectively, which ranks third and sixth in the conference, respectively. Other qualifiers senior Sham Lewis and junior Darryl White will represent SU in the sprints, while another qualifier, sophomore Franklin Taylor will be accompanied by his teammates senior Evan Stivala and sophomore Will Watson in the field events.
A contingent of SU distance runners will also represent the Orange at the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational this weekend, where they will compete against 34 other teams. This is one of Syracuse's last three meets to earn qualifying results before the BIG EAST Championship kicks off on May 6 at Villanova.
