
Arizona State and Cornell Up Next For SU

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Members of the Syracuse University track and field team will participate in the Arizona State Sun Angel Classic, while others will compete at the Cornell Spring Invite this weekend. Competition in Tempe, Ariz. will begin on Friday, April 8 and resume again on Saturday, April 9. Action at Cornell will kick off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9.
Among the athletes making the trip to Arizona, four are ranked in the top-10 in the BIG EAST in their respective events.
Junior Ieva Staponkute tops the conference in the triple jump. On the men's side, senior Sham Lewis ranks fifth in the 100-meter dash. In the field, junior Mark Melilli ranks eighth in the javelin, while sophomore Frank Taylor is ninth in the long jump.
Senior Kwaku Boah will represent the Orange in the hammer throw and the shot put. At last weekend's Sam Howell Invitational, Boah met BIG EAST standards in the shot put with a throw of 15.96 meters, which took fifth and ranks 14th overall in the conference. Melilli also qualified for BIG EAST competition last weekend with a throw of 57.15 meters in the javelin.
Highlighting the Cornell meet will be senior Nick Damato in the javelin and sophomore Will Watson in the long jump. Last weekend at Princeton, Damato took fifth in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 53.07 meters, while Watson places sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.41 meters.
